    Get a UPS

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), or also uninterruptible power source or battery backup, is a device which maintains a continuous supply of electric power to connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available gets low or spikes. A UPS is inserted between the wall plug and the radio routers both external and internal. When a power failure or abnormality occurs, the UPS will effectively switch from utility power to its own power source almost instantaneously. This helps minimize radio lockups and helps extend the life of the radios. It is often a good idea to buy a larger UPS and connect your computer also to extend its life as well.

    Common Power Problems

The primary role of any UPS is to provide short-term power when the input power source fails. However, most UPS units are also capable in varying degrees of correcting common utility power problems:

    • Power failure: defined as a total loss of input voltage.
    • Surge: defined as a momentary or sustained increase in the mains voltage.
    • Sag: defined as a momentary or sustained reduction in input voltage.
    • Spikes, defined as a brief high voltage excursion.
    • Noise, defined as a high frequency transient or a oscillation, usually injected into the line by nearby equipment.
    • Frequency instability: defined as temporary changes in the mains frequency.
    • Harmonic distortion: defined as a departure from the ideal sinusoidal waveform expected on the line.

Emergency maintenance may happen as required and without notice.

  • Connectivity Problems

A simple way to fix common wireless network problems

There are lots of simple techniques that make computing better. Quite a few of CVB customers do not known this and call over and over again with the same problems.. For example: losing connection to a wireless router is a basic problem with a simple fix that many CVB customers are unaware of.

When you drop your wireless router connection, power cycling the modem and router will likely solve the problem. It's a fact that just about any router requires an occasional power cycle. These devices run constantly and will periodically encounter conflicts that can be resolved with a  restart.

To power cycle your router, all you need to do it unplug the devices. You should wait an average of one to two minutes before turning it back on

Once enough time has passed, plug in your router. let it completely boot and acquire a connection.  Once your router is online, try to connect your computers to the network.

It can be helpful to reboot your computers before connecting them to the router. This will allow the computers to connect to the network with a fresh IP address. IP address conflicts are an all too frequent cause for network connectivity issues.

Routers and modems need frequent power cycling, and most people do not know how to do it.

Please try this first before you call our CVB tech support.

  • bullet Why is my connection up and down all the time?

There are several reasons why your Internet Service could be going up and down:

Performance of any wireless device can be affected by interference from other devices like cordless phones, microwave oven, and neighboring networks.

Try to reboot your router:  The first thing you should try is to power cycle/reboot your router.  unplug the power cord in the back, count to 5 and plug the power cord back in, wait 1-2 minutes for the router to come back online and re-connect with the CVB network before you try to open a web page or check your e-mail.

Remember not to touch the reset button. Your router is configured with a static IP to connect to the CVB network. If you press the reset button, you will reset your router to factory default settings and will lose your Internet access.

Try to reboot you routside internet antenna/radio: Unplug the antenna/radio power supply, count to 5, plug the power cord back in, wait 1-2 minutes for the antenn/radioa to come back online and re-connect with the CVB network before you try to open a web page or check your e-mail.

You could also try to temporarily disable your Anti-Virus/Firewall Software: There could be a conflict with your Microsoft recent program updates for Anti-Virus or other software firewall programs that you have. To troubleshoot this you could temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and see if your connection improves. If this is the case go to your Anti-Virus or other software firewall program manufacturer's web site and check their Support pages to see what can be done!.

Do you have anything that is interfering with your router?: There are many devices that may interfere with your wireless router or your outside antenna/radio. Do you have a 2.4GHz cordless phone, a wireless baby monitor, or is the router close to a near a microwave oven?

Where did you put your wireless router? Do not hide the unit, not behind or beside something, or surrounded by wires, or on the floor.

Contact Our Office: If you have tried the troubleshooting steps above and are still having issues, please contact our Office during normal business hours for assistance. Call 530-852-0318

You might have a bad router, or an old router firmware file, or a  your Internet antenna's line-of-sight has changed in the last storm, new leaves, grown trees, Mobile home in the way?

    If this is our problem:

If all the above has not helped call us there might be a problem at our end.  The CVB system is designed to reboot and clear the radios, but sometimes an access point does not respond to the monitoring and we have to manually reboot the access point to get it running again.

  • bullet I Can Connect - Why Can't I Get To The Network

Even though your wireless software reports you are connected to the wireless network, it does not  always mean it is. You might have mistyped the security key, it still says you are connected, but you are not; this varies model to model and whether you are using an "Open" or "Shared" authentication.

A simple way to tell if you're actually connected to the wireless LAN, is to see if you have an IP address. You can check to see if you have an IP by following these four steps:

    Go to "Start"

    Go to "Run"

    Type "cmd"

    Type "ipconfig/all"

If you can’t get an IP address

Make sure the link light for the port you are plugged into comes on. If it does not come on,  try a different port (or cable). If the light still doesn't come on, there's probably something wrong with your router.

Look in your routers manual to see if there are special setup instructions and see if the wireless router has a built-in DHCP server.

If you can get an IP address:

Make sure you are able to successfully ping your router. You can ping the router, with this procedure:

    Go to "Start"

    Go to "Run"

    Type "cmd"

Type "ping", then put in your routers IP address. Ex: If my routers IP address was 192.168.1.1, I would type "ping 192.168.1.1".

Make sure all the packets were sent successfully

What Is an IP Address Conflict?
  • An IP address conflict occurs when two computers on a LAN (local area network) or the Internet have been assigned the same IP address. IP conflicts between two computers normally render either one or both of them unusable for network operations
  • The Problem is that a system administrator assigns two computers on the LAN the same static IP address.

A malfunction in the network's DHCP server allows the same dynamic address to automatically be assigned to multiple computers.

  • bullet Why is my Wireless Connection so slow?
  • QuickStep

  • There are several reasons why your Internet Service may be running slower than normal.
  • The first thing you should understand is how speed is measured and denoted. Speeds are reported  in kilobits, kilobytes, megabits or megabytes per second. The confusion is the difference between a bit and a byte. There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so if your transfer speeds are 12 megabits per second, you are getting 1.5 megabytes per second.

The second thing you should understand, is you will not get the advertised speed on your wireless router. Your router will report you are getting 54 megabits per second, but you will likely only get half of that. This is mainly because of interference. Even on 100 megabit wired connections, you will likely never see it's full capacity. Most people will see around 2-3 megabytes per second (18-24Mbps) on their 54Mbps (802.11g) router/AP's.

The third thing you need to do, get a program that will show you what your current transfer speeds are.  We are using Speakeasy.
Go to Speakeasy - http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ select San Francisco!

Also this can be a factor:

The strength and clarity of the wireless signals
The interference caused by non-WiFi devices that share the same radio frequencies as the wireless network
The activity of neighboring WiFi devices that are sharing the radio frequency - Noise
The number and activity of people on the AP

Here is what you need to to do to troubleshoot your slow speed:

Remember the speed you had as a reference.
Try to locate anything that could be interfering with your network.
Here are different types of devices that could be interfering with your network.

    • microwaves
    • refrigerators
    • cordless phones
    • a neighbor's wireless network

To determine if any other wireless networks are in your area, download Netstumbler - www.netstumbler.com/downloads/netstumblerinstaller_0_4_0.exe - and run it. This will give you a report back on any other wireless networks in your range.

If you have 2.4 GHz wireless phones in your home, try finding the option to change the wireless channel they operate on. Many 2.4 GHz phones give you this option to lessen interference, but some may still not have that option. The easiest way to tell your (or your neighbor's) wireless phone is interfering with your network is if when the phone rings, you loose connectivity to the wireless network. If yours is the definite cause of your interference, and you can't change the channel, try buying another phone. You can either get one of the newer phones that operate at more than 5 GHz, or go with some older models that operate at 900 MHz.

As weird as it may sound, microwaves operate at frequencies very close to 2.4 GHz and can cause interference. Make sure you don't put your AP near a microwave.

    Is your computer the problem?

Try wiring your computer directly into the router and see what speeds you are getting and to see that the computer is not the problem. Older computers are not able to keep up with faster transfer rates because they cannot process the data as fast as you're sending it.

If the computer isn't the problem, make sure you're not trying to get unrealistic speeds. You're not going to get perfect speeds all the time. Wireless is completely different from wired connections and it isn't perfect.

    QuickStep

Reboot (Power Cycle) Your Router: Unplug the power cord, count to 5, plug the power cord back wait 1-2 minutes for the router to comeback up online and reconnect with the CVB network before trying to open a web page or check your e-mail.

Never press the Reset Button. Your router is configured with a static I to connect to the CVB network. If you press the Reset Button your settings will default to factory default settings and will lose all Internet connection.

Reboot Your Internet Radio/Antenna: Unplug the antenna's power supply, count to 5, plug the power cord back in, wait 1-2 minutes for the radio to come online and reconnect with our network before trying to open a web page or check your e-mail.

Reboot Your Computer: If your computer lost connection to the wireless router, reboot your computer, the computer will try to reconnect with your router.

Check the Internet Radio/Antenna's Line-of-Sight (LoS): Check that there are no obstructions between you and the CVB access point.

Are You or other people connected to your access point downloading large files? If someone your access point network is downloading large files, the CVB bandwidth shaping will limit the service for everyone on the access point. The full service will be restored when the file is completed.

Check possible interference: This is if you connecting wirelessly inside your house.  If you are connected by cable you can ignore this one!

    Where is your Router?
Do not hide the unit, not behind or beside something, or surrounded by wires, or on the floor.

When did you run a virus scan last? The radio/antenna has a setting enabled which will limit your service to dial-up speed if a computer on your network access point has a virus. This setting is automatically activated if large number of broadcast packets are detected coming from the network that you are connected to. A large number of broadcast packets are usually an indication of a Computer Virus or a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack.

What else can it be? If you have checked all the possibilities and are still experiencing slow service, please call us at 530-852-0318. If CVB is experiencing an outage there will be a recording with the information regarding the outage and possible time frame.

  • To Top

  • bullet Why has my connection deteriorated?
  • This can have at least two very different causes.
  • First, if your antenna is pointed anywhere where there are trees which have grown into the line of sight between the antenna and direction of the CVB access point. Trees and leaves can block the signal from getting through to your radio. If they're your trees, all you need to do is get them trimmed or we can come out and try to move the antenna to another spot. Be aware we charge $95/hour for this.

Second, you could have an infected computer. It could be spyware, adware, or a virus. Any of these can generate enough traffic trying to reproduce itself that it can slow down not only your connection, but also everyone else’s connecting to the same access point as you are.

CVB will disable your access until we can be assured that the threat is no longer present.

  • To Top

  • bullet Why can’t I connect with both my computers?
  • There are several reasons why a computer may not be able to connect to the Internet. For a list of the most common problems and solutions, please see each section below depending on whether you are connecting to your wireless router using a computer cable or connecting wirelessly.

If You are Connecting Using a Computer Cable
    • Check your cables, both the network and power cable. For power, also make sure the other end is securely plugged into the wall. You'd be surprised how often we find that something has become unplugged. Sometimes your dog or cat has “unplugged it” or bumped it loose. (CVB had several cases where we had to come out and found that the dog had “unplugged” it.  Remember we charge for coming out!
    • Reboot your router. Unplug the round, black power plug from the back of the router, sometimes power fluctuations like spikes, brownouts or flickers can leave the router unable to properly send & receive data.
    • Reboot your outside radio, power problems cause about 95% of all issues. The first item connected to the cable coming in from the outside radio antenna is called a POE (Power-Over-Ethernet) unit. One socket of this will be marked "CPE" or “POE”.Unplug this wire from the unit for about 30 seconds then plug it back in, allowing the radio to fully reset for about 30 seconds or so after plugging it back in.

  • bullet How do I reboot the outside radio(antenna)
  • Reboot Your Internet Antenna: To do this unplug the antenna's power supply count to 5, plug the power cord back in, wait another 1-2 minutes for the antenna to come online and reconnect with the network before you open a web page or check your e-mail.

    powersupply
  •
  • Shut down and restart your computer. Do a power off shutdown, not only a restart of Windows.  Windows can stop communicating properly. A full power-off will allow all memory and buffers to clear, and you can get a fresh start.
  • If you are using a stand alone router, and cannot stay connected, check the router’s antenna. Make sure it is in an upright position, or try moving the router to a different spot. Radio waves sometimes have problems with things in the way like furniture, walls, doors, the computer the router's sitting next to, the refrigerator , the microwave, and even the phone in the next room,  all this can reflect and/or refract the signal, and since we can’t see radio waves, you need to experiment where you place the antenna. Do not hide the unit, not behind or beside something, or surrounded by wires, or on the floor.

Check Your Network Adapter: First make sure your network adapter is "enabled"; Second check the computer's IP settings to make sure your network adapter is set to "Automatically obtain an IP address" and "Obtain DNS server automatically."

Confirm that Your Network Adapter Hardware is Working: The place where your computer cable plugs into the back of your computer Port is called the LAN network adapter, or the Network Port. Sometimes the network adapter goes bad and needs to be replaced.

Check Your Anti-virus/Firewall Software: If your Anti-Virus and/or software firewall program (like Trend Micro, Norton 360, McAfee, and Others.) has expired and you have not renewed it, it may be preventing your Internet access.. Un-install the anti-virus/firewall program by opening the Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Remove the anti-virus/firewall program. See if you have access after the un-install.

  • speedmeterGo to Speakeasy - http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ select San Francisco

There are a lot of components that are involved in your speed test results:

Download Speed - measures how fast your connection delivers content to your computer
      Upload Speed -
measures how fast content is delivered from your computer to others on the Internet
      Backbones
      Networks
      Latency
      - is a synonym for delay, how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one point to another
      Ping times
      DNS servers

Kbps - Kbps transfer (the speed at which data can be transmitted between devices.) rate - kilobit per second, there are 8 bits in a byte

How accurate are speed tests? No speed test engine can give 100% accurate results, because there are factors on which the results depend - A speed test is only simulated

The Test Server location is important.  Choose one in your area (San Francisco)

What's the difference for download/upload speeds?

  • There is no difference between uploading and downloading data aside from the direction of the data transfer. The better your Internet connection speed, the faster your uploading and downloading capability.
  • Download speeds refer to the rate that data travels from the Internet to the user's computer, such as the loading of a web page. Upload speeds measure the journey from the user's computer to the Internet, such as e-mailing photos. Many times, only one speed is given in descriptions of Internet service ˜ the download speed ˜ since that's the one of most concern to typical residential Internet users.

Symmetric Broadband Speed - the rated download and upload times are of the same value
Asymmetric Broadband Speed - the rated download and upload times are not equal

Keep in mind that Internet speeds vary and can depend on a variety of factors. These may include the number of Internet applications running on your computer, the number of users sharing the Internet connection at any given time at your home or office, and the efficiency of your operating system.

  • bullet How can I increase my wireless signal?

  • You may want to consider changing your router to channel 1, 6, 11. Channel 6 is the most commonly used channel for 2.4 Ghz devices (including cordless phones, wireless keyboards and mice). In most cases you will get the maximum range on channel 1. Make sure that the router in question is positioned in the highest point available. If your home is is 2 stories high, We recommend you place the router on the second floor.

  • Wireless Router Information
  • A wireless router is basically a network device that lets you connect several computers to the internet without using a cable, but by using wireless access points, or WLAN. The wireless routers allow the freedom of several users to be able to access the internet.

Basically, a wireless router works using signals that have the same radio frequency range as the wireless network card installed in the PC. The significant feature of this exchange of signal system is that both the router and the network card function on the same radio frequency range allowing the transmission of data back and to, between the devices.
  • Before buying a wireless router, it is best to check out the reviews about various brands in the market. There are many reliable and well-known brands such as Belkin wireless router, Netgear wireless router, and Linksys wireless router. Check out online to see which one will suit your needs, whether at home or in the office.

Every router is a little bit different here's a couple of things you can try:

On the basic setup of your router, you should be able to select a connection type. It sounds like yours is PPPoE or maybe L2TP. With either of those selections, you should be able to enter in a user name and password.

  • What is an IP address? - Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods for example: 127.0.0.1. Since these numbers are usually assigned to internet service providers and can often be used to identify the country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet.
  • Find out your IP address - Go to : http://whatismyipaddress.com/index.php

What is a Private IP - An IP address is your computer's equivalent of your postal address and just like the mail service, each computer has to have its own address so that it will only receive the information that is meant for it and not anything that is meant for someone else.

  • bullet Is there anything that can interfere with my wireless router signal?

  • There are known issues with interference, including (but not limited to) amateur radios, existing microwave towers or antennas, and other 2.4 or 5.8 Ghz wireless devices. If you have a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone, you will need to locate it at least 10 feet away from your computer, antenna cable, and/or antenna.

  • bullet Is there anything I can do to boost my wireless router signal?

  • wirelessrouterThere are a variety of options to consider to boost your routers signal:

Minimize obstacles. Metal objects and dense objects are the types of things you want to avoid, but if you're using a directional antenna, any obstacles at all can be problematic.

Check the connections on your wireless router, as a loose connection to an antenna can introduce considerable noise. The antenna connectors are designed to screw on tight, but only as tight as needed. Make sure they're screwed in until they stop moving.

Use high-quality cables if your antenna is connected to the router or client by a cable. Inexpensive cables introduce more noise than higher-quality cables. By replacing the cable, you can eliminate noise

  • VPN Remote Access

A VPN supplies network connectivity over a possibly long physical distance. In this respect, a VPN is a form of Wide Area Network (WAN). VPNs enable file sharing, video conferencing and similar network services. In recent years, many organizations have increased the mobility of their workers by allowing more employees to telecommute.

      1. A remote host (client) wanting to log into the company network first connects to any public Internet Service Provider (ISP) like CVB.

      2. Next, the host initiates a VPN connection to the company VPN server. This connection is made via a VPN client installed on the remote host.

      3. Once the connection has been established, the remote client can communicate with the internal company systems over the Internet just as if it were a local host.

  • bullet What ports do I need to open if I am using CITRIX?

  • CITRIX
requires you to forward the 1023-5000 ports on the Linksys WRT300N

For instructions on setting up port forwarding on your router: http://www.portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/CITRIX/CITRIXindex.htm

Check if your Port is open: http://www.portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm

    What is a Port?

An IP address is divided into Ports, so that one IP can be used by multiple programs to send and receive data at the same time, so that you can check your e-mail and surf the Net at the same time. Browsing the web uses Port 80 and getting your e-mail uses Port 110 for example.

When a program is using a Port to send or receive data, the Port is blocked.

    What is Port Forwarding?

When a computer on the internet sends data to the external IP address of the router, the router needs to know what to do with the data. Port Forwarding simply tells the router which computer on the local area network to send the data to. When you have port forwarding rules set up, your router takes the data off of the external IP address:port number and sends that data to an internal IP address:port number. Port Forwarding rules are created per port. A Port can only be used by one program at a time.

  • Virus Information

  • bullet Why is it important to stay online secure?

All your computers should have Virus Detection and Protection installed and your computer should be checked frequently .A virus can cause your computer to run slower .

As of January 2008 there are a total of 73,813 virus detected!

There is no device based security with CVB Wireless Broadband. Security is similar to mobile phone calls, or using a phone line to access your internet. Sensitive data needs to be sent through a secure web site encrypting the information before sending it.

    Using a Firewall

A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. If your computer is not protected when you connect to the Internet, hackers can gain access to personal information on your computer. They can install code on your computer that destroys files or causes malfunctions. They can also use your computer to cause problems on other home and business computers connected to the Internet. A firewall helps to screen out many kinds of malicious Internet traffic before it reaches your computer

Connecting to the internet without a firewall is a little like leaving the door to your house unlocked. It’s a ‘virtual security fence’ around your PC, watching for information that is not supposed be entering or leaving your computer.

You can purchase firewall software over the internet and from most computer stores.

  • bullet Identity Theft Protection

  • Identity Theft is the one of the fastest growing white collar crimes of the 21st Century. You can no longer afford to ignore identity theft protection. You can take some steps to make sure you are as protected as possible. A recent 'Financial Crimes Report to the Public' by the FBI claims that 9.91 million Americans were victims of identity theft and have experienced losses totaling $52.6 billion. More than half of victims had their current credit cards taken over by criminals. While new account frauds were estimated to have victimized 3.23 million people and to have caused losses of $36.7 billion.

      Online Methods:

      Hacking

      • Your information can be obtained for free or purchased through an online database.
      • Hackers can obtain your information by gaining access to a merchant's database.
      • Someone may put up a 'mirrored' web site that looks exactly like a popular merchant's web site and get your credit card information when you try to place an order.
      • Placing an order at an unsecured web site sends your information across the internet without encryption where it can easily be captured.

      Phishing

Phishing occurs when you receive an e-mail that looks like it is from an online merchant, bank or similar organization. The e-mail will contain the same graphics and style of the impersonated merchant and will contain links to the site that look real but are actually disguised.

      Spyware

Marketers spend millions of dollars every year to try and identify the spending habits of consumers. Your online surfing and purchasing habits are a wealth of information for businesses. By installing Spyware on your system, usually in exchange for free software or a free service, your surfing and purchasing habits can be identified and analyzed by marketers and businesses

      Trojan Horses

Trojans find many sneaky ways to gain access to your computer such as e-mail attachments, peer-to-peer file sharing programs, infected disks and CDs. Once a Trojan is on your system, the hacker can use it to open a 'back door' in your system to allow them to gain access to all your personal files.

    • To Top

  • bullet What you need to do
  • Make sure you have current virus protection software installed on all of your computers.
  • Make sure you are using a router. Don’t by-pass the router and try to access the Internet directly

Make sure you have a password not to obvious as a phone numbers, your address, etc. maybe using upper and lowercase letters and numbers. A hacker uses software programs to decode passwords.

Make sure your system has a good web site phishing filter.

If you buy online or bank, be sure the web site shows a valid security certificate. It shows as https:// instead for http:// Site's that use a secure connection (SSL) must also display the security seal and daily security scan status from a reputable third party.

  • bullet When Using Wireless Internet Can My Computer Be Seen By Others?

    Be aware of:

    • Wireless access points operate much like a hub. Any wireless adapter within range can see all of the  network traffic in the area. Visited any open (meaning not WPA-encrypted)  wireless hotspots lately? Anyone in the coffee shop or library, or even just  outside on the street or a nearby building, could be sniffing your traffic.
    • Hotel or other third-party provided internet connections are also vulnerable, since you
    • have no idea what, or who, is sharing or watching your connection. It's possible that you're on a hub, and the  room next door or down the hall could be watching your traffic, or it's possible  that the hotel staff themselves are tapped into the internet traffic to and from  all the rooms.
    • Landlord-provided internet connections, or those  provided by or shared with a roommate or house mate fall into the same category:  whomever set it up could very easily be watching the internet traffic going to  and from the connection(s) that they provide you.
    • Your connection at work can also easily be monitored by your employer. In fact, the only difference between your employer and a  hotel or landlord provided connection is that in most places the employer  snooping on your use of their connection is legal, whereas the others typically are not.

"... if you're on the road you might simply wait until you're home to access sensitive sites like online banking or others."

Phishing - using false e-mails and web sites to steal confidential information - Think twice next time you are asked to enter your personal information on the Internet. Criminals use a technique called phishing to trick consumers into entering their personal information, such as passwords or bank account details, into web pages that appear to be legitimate. This information can be used to steal your identity, your money or both. All of the Internet security software providers we have reviewed offer anti-phishing protection that will alert you when you are visiting a suspected phishing site.

    How does it work?

You receive a legit looking e-mail from a web site that you recognize as a well-known brand. The e-mail will ask you to visit the web site by clicking on an embedded link, but the link will take you to a dummy web site asking to enter your personal or financial information. The scammers then use your username and password, credit card number and expiration date etc. to steal from you
